The 12th Aram Khachaturian International Competition solemnly ended on June 14. The Gala concert was attended by the Spouse of the President of RA, Rita Sargsyan under the high patronage of which the competition was organized. This year the winner’s trophy was shared between Miran Vaupotić (Croatia) and June-Sung Park (South Korea/Germany).
Besides the 1st Prize there were also various special prizes: the jury member Michalis Economou and the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra have established a special prize “The best interpretation of the Symphony No 102 by Joseph Haydn” which was awarded to Miran Vaupotić who will perform with the City of Athens Symphony Orchestra during the next season. Jury member Constantine Orbelian and Kaunas Philharmonic Orchestra have established a special prize “The best interpretation of the Pavane by Eduard Hayrapetyan” which was granted to June-Sung Park who will have a joint concert with Kaunas Philharmonic Orchestra. National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet after A. Spendiaryan has prepared a special prize in the category of “The Best interpretation of the Adagio from the ballet “Spartacus” by Aram Khachaturian”. This was another special prize for June-Sung Park. The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia granted the special prize “The Orchestra Award” to June-Sung Park who will perform as an invited conductor with the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia during the 2016/2017 season. According to the decision of the State Youth Orchestra, Beatrice Venezi will be the assisting conductor of this orchestra during the 2016/2017 season. Miran Vaupotić and Toshifumi Kanai (Japan) received a special prize established by Ludwig van Beethoven Association. “The Audience Award” was awarded to Boon Hua Lien (Singapore).
There was also another prize granted to the official orchestra of the Aram Khachaturian International Competition that is the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia. While giving the prize to the orchestra jury member, Senior Board member of the Artist management company Askonas Holt, Mark Hildrew (Great Britain) mentioned that the heroes of the competition are the musicians of this ensemble who used to have daily lasting rehearsals with all 12 participants of the competition. “It is not honest to call this orchestra as Youth Orchestra. You must be proud to have one of the most brilliant orchestras in your country. That’s why I want to send my appreciation to these musicians whose endless and devoted work provided the success of the competition”-said Mark Hildrew.
Executive director of the London Philharmonia Orchestra David Whelton invited all the 4 finalists of the contest to London to attend the performances of the Philharmonia Orchestra and have rehearsals with outstanding conductors.
By the way, exclusively for the competition the baton of Aram Khachaturian was removed from the Aram Khachaturian House-Museum and the winners of the competition conducted their performances with this very baton.
Aram Khachaturian International Competition was warmly saluted by the president of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, Didier Schnorhk. He sent congratulatory words to the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia particularly for the outstanding performances of the ensemble during these days. “The Organizational committee, participants, jury members and the audience proved the importance of this competition not only for your people but for the whole musical world. I have to assure you that you’ve been organizing an absolutely stunning event in Yerevan. Let’s say that the quality of the competition is pretty high and you all should be proud of the great level of the musical performance and the organizational activity. Thanks to this competition the whole world is getting acquainted with the music of Aram Khachaturian, with Armenia and its glory”-said Didier Schnorhk.
The winners of the competition Miran Vaupotić and June-Sung Park expresses their happiness and at the same time sadness because this beautiful feast became a past. They also sent their gratitude to the musicians of the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia for their immense support.
For the first time in its history the Aram Khachaturian International Competition was organized in the category of “Conducting”. 57 candidates applied for the participation but only 12 from this list were selected to perform during next round. By the end of the contest there were 4 conductors who’ve become selected for the final.
Worth mentioning that the Aram Khachaturian International Competition was organized under the high patronage of the Spouse of the President of RA, Rita Sargsyan, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of RA, Cultural foundation “Aram Khachaturian-Competition” and Yerevan State Komitas Conservatory. General partner of the competition is the Intergovernmental Foundation for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation (IFESCCO).
