The Aram Khachaturian International Competition is held in Yerevan from June 6 to June 14 every year starting from 2003. For the first time it was implemented within the framework of events, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of great composer. In 2013 the Khachaturian competition was added to the World Federation of International Music Competitions becoming the only Armenian competition awarded with such an honored prize during the whole history of the Federation.
The competition aims at identifying talented young musicians in three specialties – “Piano”, “Violin” and “Cello.” According to an anonimous decision of all the members of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, in 2016 the Aram Khachaturian International Competition was supplemented with another specialty that is the conducting. It must be noted that the 60th General Assembly of the World Federation of International Music Competitions was held in 2016 in Armenia gathering more than 115 delegates from 6 continents.
The project is being implemented thanks to joint efforts of RA Ministry of Culture, “Aram Khachaturian-competition” Cultural Foundation and Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. It is held under the high patronage of the Spouse of RA President Mrs. Rita Sargsyan, who is honorary president of the Board of Trustees of the competition. The Board of Trustees includes such well-known figures as: Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Valery Gergiev, Professor Reinhart von Gutzeit, Pavel Kogan, Professor Ino Mirkovich, Elizbieta and Krzysztof Penderecki, Professor Alexander Sokolov, Professor Alexander Tchaikovsky, Маrk Zilberquit, Tanya Dorn and other significant persons. “Aram Khachaturian – Competition” Cultural Foundation
In 2003 the whole music world was celebrating the 100th anniversary of great Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. It was planned that the anniversary year would to be full of cultural events, implemented both in Armenia and abroad. In this regard the “Aram Khachaturian – 100” Foundation had been established by the Government of the Republic of Armenia to fulfill such a large project and supervise the entire process of its implementation. Within the framework of the above mentioned events, the first Aram Khachaturian International Competition was held. It was aimed at identifying talented young musicians in three specialties – “Piano”, “Violin” and “Cello.” Taking into consideration many positive reviews, later on it was decided to hold the competiton annually. This decision resulted a need for a special institute responsible for all matters related to the event. So, in 2004, the “Aram Khachaturian – 100” Foundation was renamed and the new one, the “Aram Khachaturian – Competition” Foundation jointly with RA Ministry of Culture and Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory started implementation of the Aram Khachaturian International Competition.
